About Cardiology MRI

Cardiac BIOMED SCAN resonance imaging (MRI) is non-invasive and radiation free, giving us unique insight into the structure of your heart and surrounding blood vessels. MRI can detect and help diagnose aneurysms (widening of the blood vessel) or tumors, as well as detect abnormalities like scar tissue or fibrotic tissue/scarring in the heart muscle. It is also useful in identifying the location of stenosis (blockage) in the heart arteries, such as plaque build-up or narrowing of the artery due to atherosclerosis.

MRI can be uncomfortable for patients because they are required to remain very still for the duration of the procedure. Many people report experiencing claustrophobic feelings because of the enclosed space of the scanner. If you have a claustrophobic condition or are unsure whether an MRI is safe for you, please talk to your doctor before your appointment.

We can combine MRI and ultrasound (US) to track the movement of your heart and its structures during breathing. A custom workflow was developed comprising an MR-compatible ultrasound system and a real-time feature motion tracking algorithm that adapts the position of the acquired MRI slice. The US data is transmitted to the MRI scanner control computer and affects the running pulse sequence in real time.

Some heart devices, such as pacemakers and implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICD), can interfere with the ability to obtain clear images during a MRI scan. Please speak to your cardiologist or Duke Health specialist before your exam to learn more about your specific device and whether it can be safely used with an MRI.
